Representatives of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) visited facilities of State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SERAW) on the 2nd September 2019.
The management team of the Enterprise welcomed the Director General, OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – William D. Magwood, IV and Véronique Rouyer – Head of Nuclear Safety Technology and Regulation, NEA.
During the meeting, SERAW‘s Executive Director Dilyan Petrov introduced the guests to the subject of activity of the Enterprise as a National operator for safe management of RAW generated within the country. He outlined the current priorities in the work of the organization related to the decommissioning process of shutdown nuclear facilities, as well as the construction of the National Disposal Facility for Low and Intermediate-level Radioactive Waste (NDF). The highlight of the introduction was also the innovative technologies utilised in the construction of a new infrastructure in support of the decommissioning – the Plasma Melting Facility and the Size reduction and Decontamination Workshop. The OECD representatives were informed about the areas, which SERAW is interested in cooperating and participating within the Regional Initiative for Nuclear Advancement (RINA): RAW management and decommissioning; RAW disposal and possibilities for research in support of the national programmes; infrastructure development and education for innovations, etc.
William D. Magwood, IV and Véronique Rouyer visited the Turbine Hall of Units 1-4 and Radiana site. They were particularly interested in the future NDF facility and they asked a series of questions related to the project as well as the construction progress.
