Twenty four experts from ten countries arrived in Kozloduy to participate in a five-day seminar related to present issues regarding the management of radioactive waste (RAW), by focusing on the materials generated from the operation of nuclear units and on RAW as a results of the decommissioning of shutdown power units.
The forum is arranged by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SERAW) with the cooperation of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA).
Within three days each of the participants will have the opportunity to hold a presentation of their field of specialty, with enough time for discussion provided. The seminar programme includes a technical tour during which the experts will become familiar with the progress of the decommissioning works on Units 1-4, with the facilities and installations for RAW processing, and they will visit Site Radiana where the National Disposal Facility for RAW is yet to be constructed.
In his introduction, Mr. Michael Ojovan – an IAEA representative, emphasized: “Bulgaria gained significant and interesting experience in the field of the management of materials resulting from the decommissioning of shutdown nuclear units. For this reason we are particularly satisfied that it was possible for this seminar to take place especially here”. For his part, the Executive director of SERAW – Mr. Dilyan Petrov stated: “I am happy that so many leading RAW management specialists are gathered here these days. I hope that this time would be very useful for all. On its turn SERAW gladly embraces this hosting role and I believe that beneficially for all colleagues, we will show the Bulgarian progress and experience in the field of characterisation, processing and safe storage of RAW. Our work is very responsible and we are entrusted with the care of future generations and the environment”.
