Fourteen students from St. Cyril and Methodius Primary School, Novi Han, accompanied by their teacher and the school principal, Mrs Yordanka Bozhinkova, visited the Permanent Repository for Radioactive Waste near Novi Han.
The children are members of Young Journalist Club and work under the project “SUCCESS”. The visit was initiated by them and it is expected the young people will summarize their impressions in a special edition of their school newspaper, dedicated to the topic.
Avgustin Naydenov, Chief Engineer of SD PRRAW-Novi Han, told them about the 50-years history of the repository, for its main functions, for the approaches applied for the safe radioactive waste management and for the reliable protection of the people and the environment from the harmful effects of the waste. The meeting was attended with great attention and interest of the students, who asked many questions – for the RAW packaging, for the safety measures, for the repository’s future.
The group had the opportunity to visit the uncontrolled area of the facility. The children also saw the unique vehicles which transport identified radioactive sources from the whole country.
The young journalists parted with their hosts with the promise of new meeting – during the autumn when an Open Door Day is planned for the repository, which will be a part of the program for its 50-th anniversary celebration.
