The tenth Kozloduy Honey Festival attracted more than 2 000 visitors, who met honey producers and artists with handmade items during this year’s anniversary event on 23rd and 24th February 2018. The celebration has been held without interruption since 2009, and is a joint initiative of the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste” (SERAW) and the bee-keepers from the region of Kozloduy.
The event was opened with a welcome speech by the Executive Director of SERAW –
Mr. Dilyan Petrov, who expressed his appreciation for the work and the constancy of all producers and fans of the Festival, without whose interest and support the forum would not have such a growing popularity.
Mr. Petrov awarded four participants with a Certificate of Merit for their special contributions to the process of establishment and development of the event, with their participation through all the years of its existence: bee-keepers Tsvetan Yovov and Tsvetan Sandulov from the town of Kozloduy, Petya Ivanova from the village of Ostrov and the Doyen of beekeepers in the region – the 86 year-old Georgi Osikovski from the village of Selanovtsi. ”You have built a new tradition in our small town. We believe that the Honey Festival will continue to enrich us with its vividness and abundance!” said the Mayor of Kozloduy, Mrs. Marinella Nikolova, at the opening.
Part of the Festival programme was a culinary exhibition with honey sweets made by members of the Turlashka mahala Pensioner Cultural Club. Their selected recipes could be found in a special little book titled “Granny’s Sweet – In My Notebook”. In another part of the programme, students from Kozloduy met with experienced bee-keepers in a lecture on “Being a Bee-keeper – Joy and Challenges”. During this lecture, the results of a competition for short literary works with the motto “For the bees and honey – in 21 words”, in which there were nearly 30 participants, were announced. Another focus of the Festival was a meeting of honey producers with experts from the State Fund for Agriculture, who presented current facts about the Bee-keepers Subsidy Programme in 2018.
Emotional recitals of poems by children from the Vassil Levski Primary School – Kozloduy were a special gift for everybody on the anniversary occasion, as well as an improvised fashion-show of clothes with ethno-elements prepared by the Starata Rakla (Old Chest) Crafts Development Association – from the village of Sofronievo. Volunteers from the Tri-Chetiri (3-4) Theatrical group, who for another year actively participated in the organisation during the Festival, came in the role of the mannequins. Also, the members of the Women in the Nuclear Industry Association contributed traditionally to its popularisation.
