Review of the Decommissioning project of shutdown nuclear facilities

22.06.2017

„I witnessed satisfactory progress in all projects and this is very important for the overall progress of the Decommissioning programme”, so commented Mr. Simon Murphy from Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission (EC). He, along with his colleague Mr. Marco Migliorelli and Mr. Valentin Seider from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), visited the facilities of State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SE RAW) at Kozloduy NPP site on 20 and 21 June 2017.

The visit was planned and conducted following an established practice to review regularly the decommissioning process every six months. The purpose of the monitoring mission was for the representatives of the European Commission and EBRD, which administers the funds by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF), to be updated with the progress of the projects.

After the walk-downs and meetings in accordance with the agenda for the visit, Mr. Simon Murphy shared his direct impressions: „Undoubtedly there has been visible progress in the dismantling activities in the Turbine Hall – a major part of the equipment has been dismantled. We also observed that two very important projects are now nearing completion – the Plasma Melting Facility (PMF) and Size Reduction and Decontamination Workshop (SRDW). These are key projects for the success of the overall Decommissioning programme. I am particularly impressed with the PMF, because I believe that when the facility is put into operation, it will be an achievement and contribution of SERAW to the international expertise in the field of RAW management. I’m also happy with the good news that the full scale construction and installation works for the National Disposal Facility for low  and intermediate level radioactive waste are about to commence soon“.

One week prior to the monitoring mission in Kozloduy, the overall Decommissioning project progress was also presented at the Assembly of Contributors of the KIDSF in London. The implementation of the decommissioning activities for the first half of 2017, in accordance with the Annual Work Programme and progress of the projects supporting the process, were reported at the Assembly session. The participants in the Assembly expressed their satisfaction with the results achieved by SERAW and demonstrated willingness to support the further decommissioning process development.
