A group of 18 students from the Faculty of Economics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” visited the facilities of State Enterprise Radioactive Waste in connection with their study in the Master’s programme “Energy Markets and Services”. The students saw the Main Control Room of Unit 2 and they viewed the Units 1 and 2 Reactor Hall from the observation glass. They also visited the Control Room of the Size Reduction and Decontamination Workshop – a facility specially built in support of the safe decommissioning. As a result of the visit, the future masters had a number of interesting questions related to SERAW operations, which were answered by our experts. The information was supplemented by educational video materials that the students were introduced to at the Information Centre for Decommissioning.
“It was very interesting and useful for the students from the Master’s programme “Energy Markets and Services” at the Faculty of Economics to see the progress in decommissioning of Units 1 to 4, to learn more about the latest technological solutions used in the enterprise for radiological assessment, processing and storage of radioactive waste or possible release of materials from regulatory control. It was also valuable for our colleagues to see in person the facilities that have safely produced electricity for 30 years and are now going through the final phase of their life cycle. We are very glad that we had the opportunity to see through the observation glass the Units 1 and 2 Reactor Hall and to find out from first-hand what are the stages and operations for decommissioning of the units.
I believe that now everyone has a much better understanding of what nuclear energy is by experiencing it in-person, not by looking at textbooks, the Internet, the media. It is different when you feel the scale and professionalism of the people who work in this sector”, summed up at the end of the visit Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Georgiev, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Director of the Master’s Programme “Energy Markets and Services” at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
