The Plasma Melting Facility (PMF)* for radioactive waste (RAW) underwent start-up operations in the period 5-8 December 2022 following scheduled maintenance. Nominal parameters for RAW treatment were reached on 9th December, bringing the facility into its sixth operational campaign.
The Plasma Melting Facility treats RAW from Kozloduy NPP Units 5 and 6 operations, as well as RAW from Units 1 to 4 currently under decommissioning.
Since the first operational campaign, which commenced at the end of 2018, more than 3800 m3 of RAW has been treated, with a waste volume reduction of more than 90 times achieved over the course of the last campaign.

*One of the most significant projects implemented with the support of the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) was the construction of a Facility for Treatment and Conditioning of Solid Radioactive Waste with High Volume Reduction Factor. The Plasma Melting Facility is a one-of-a-kind technology and is capable of achieving a high volume reduction factor by feeding various combinations of RAW, which is difficult to achieve with other technologies. This ensures compliance with all the RAW management principles and, above all, the disposal of minimal quantities and not burdening the future generations with care of the RAW generated nowadays. The implementation of the project is the work of an international consortium and is of outstanding professional interest to the international nuclear community.
