Kozloduy NPP’s Units 3 and 4 with licenses for decommissioning
22.08.2016On the 28th July 2016, State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SERAW) obtained decommissioning licenses for Units 3 and 4 of Kozloduy NPP.
The documents were handed officially on the 22nd August 2016 to the enterprise’s Executive Director – Dilyan Petrov by the Chairman of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lachezar Kostov.
The licenses allow SERAW to perform the essential decommissioning activities on Units 3 and 4 – dismantling of structures, systems and components of the Controlled Area, decontamination of contaminated materials, management of materials and radioactive waste, free release of materials from regulatory control, as well as to perform activities that support the main ones.
The issue of licenses was preceded by extensive work on the preparation of a huge volume of documents. The main part of it was a Decommissioning Plan, which is set in 24 chapters.
Today’s event brings satisfaction because it is crucial for one of our most important long-term projects – the decommissioning of the shutdown power units – so commented Mr. Petrov. According to him, the whole process of decommissioning of Units 1-4* is already precisely regulated and harmonised with the Bulgarian legislation. There is a clear overview of all decommissioning aspects including schedules, deadlines, sequence, functions of the regulatory body, so the safety of each phase is guaranteed. The licenses are essential for the future cooperation with the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund through with the European Union provides the finances for the decommissioning activities as a Grant.
The term of the license is 10 years.
* The licenses for the decommissioning of Units 1 and 2 were issued on 14th November 2014
