European Union representatives on a visit at SERAW

10.10.2014

On 8th and 9th October 2014, State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SERAW) hosted a scheduled work meeting with representatives of the European Commission (EC) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).  Such work visits are carried out twice a year before the Assembly of the Donors of the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) through which the European Union supports as a grant the decommissioning activities on shut down nuclear units.

On behalf of the EC the meeting was attended by Simon Murphy and the new members of the team for Bulgaria – Gianfranco Brunetti and Jean-Philippe Guisset, and Valentin Šeider as a EBRD representative.  On behalf of SERAW the meeting was attended by the executive director Dilyan Petrov together with heads of specialized departments and divisions. Within the work programme, the participants reviewed issues divided in two major topics: the regulatory frame and the technical progress of the projects related to the decommissioning process. As part of the first topic, the group discussed the status of the Environmental Impact Assessments for the Plasma Melting Facility (PMF) of the Units 1-4 Decommissioning, the National Disposal Facility for low- and intermediate level radioactive waste (NDF) as well as the progress of the decommissioning licensing process. Regarding the second topic, a presentation provided information on the current status of the eight main projects.

During the visit, the EU representatives visited the specialised division for processing and storage of radioactive waste, the Turbine Hall of Units 1-4 and site Radiana, where the NDF will be built.

At the end of the meeting Mr. Murphy summarised the impressions of EU team as follows: “You made a good progress in all projects. At today’s visit I saw a big progress since February, when I was here the last time. I see that much more activities are being performed with the necessary dynamics for assigned projects.”
