Progress of the projects for decommissioning of nuclear units

28.08.2013

Enterprise’s experts began with activities for size reduction of large equipment dismantled in Turbine Hall of the shutdown nuclear units in Kozloduy

Today, the 28th August 2013, State Enterprise Radioactive Waste commenced procedures for installation of cutting machines for organizing of size reduction areas for large equipment dismantled in Turbine Hall (TH). The facilities are being installed, tested and put into service by the specialists from SE RAW Decommissioning Directorate under the supervision of the suppliers of the specialized machinery who are also committed to conducting training in working with the machines. Thanks to the new machines it would be possible for the special operations for size reduction of large equipment to be started.

With the implementation of this project, International Projects Division of SE RAW performed within less than a year all seven contractual agreements relating to the decommissioning activities that SE RAW signed during the last four months of 2012. The following equipment was delivered under the contract agreements: mobile working movable platforms for work at heights; fork lifters; wire saw for the dismantling works in Turbine Hall; thermal cutting equipment and hoisting equipment; electrical hand tools and consumables.

All projects are financed by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund within the European Union Grant for decommissioning of shutdown nuclear units in Bulgaria.

Meanwhile, the notices for commencement of another three projects were published at the end of July in accordance with the rules and policies of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development:

Supply and installation of design modifications and construction of the seismic qualification upgrade to AB-2 building of Kozloduy NPP;

Procurement of different types of containers for transport and storage of materials resulting from dismantling works and related services;

Design & construction of sites for management of materials from the decommissioning activities at Kozloduy NPP Units 1 – 4.

For the determination of the necessary hoisting and transportation equipment for the decommissioning of the 440 MW units of Kozloduy NPP, an analysis was prepared and later approved, that includes the schemes of movement during dismantling of equipment in TH and Reactor Building, the necessary hoisting and transportation equipment for transfer of materials inside and outside the TH.

In addition, a pre-design study of the possibility for decommissioning of Diesel-generator station-1, clearance of the building from main and auxiliary equipment and subsequent use of the building for other purposes, was submitted in August to the SERAW experts for review and opinion. The purpose is the building to be adapted for the production of reinforced concrete containers – the packages where the treated radioactive waste is sealed for safe storage and subsequent disposal.

During the Assembly of the Donors this year, the last two projects were presented as intention in favor of the successful decommissioning process. The prepared analyses are essential to the justification of the projects during the upcoming Assembly at the end of the year, which will ensure their financing and the actual performance of activities.

At the beginning of August, SE RAW published also a General notice, which provides information to the interested parties about the KIDSF procurement plan for a year ahead.
