On 30 July, 2024, State Enterprise Radioactive Waste received a Utilization Permit for the building of the former Diesel Generator Station (DGS-1) located on the industrial site of Kozloduy NPP, for decommissioning purposes. By this document, the building, being reconstructed and equipped as a workshop for the production of reinforced concrete containers (RCC) for radioactive waste, is commissioned, and the actual work activities begin immediately – on 1st August.
The workshop is equipped with state-of-the-art rebar processing machines and three shuttering moulds, and the heating & ventilation systems allow year-round operation, which will lead to continuity in the RCC production process carried out by SERAW. “The commissioning of the Workshop will lead to a significant increase in the capacity of the Reinforced Concrete Containers Section,” stated its Head, Tsvetan Andreev, who also explained that this is of great importance in order to adequately meet the expected demands by the Wet Solid Waste Treatment Installation. According to the calculations, to ensure effective functioning thereof for 2024, 470 RCC should be produced.
The Construction Permit for the new workshop was issued in July 2020, and the construction site for the reconstruction of the building was opened in September 2020. Financing of the project is through 100% grant funds provided by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) supporting the decommissioning of Kozloduy NPP Units 1 to 4, administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
