On the 2nd of July 2014, a symbolic “first spade in the ground” was made on the site of the planned National Disposal Facility for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (NDF). This started the construction of a fence on the site – a mandatory element of the facility infrastructure.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Dilyan Petrov – executive director of SE RAW, Ira Stefanova – Chief Engineer of NDF together with representatives of the Contractor – “Technoexportstroy”, the designers and the construction supervisor of the project for construction of a fence around Radiana site, signed the documents necessary for starting the construction works. Attendees at the event were also Margarita Korkinova – deputy executive director “Finance, Administration and Security”, representatives of Municipality Kozloduy and SE RAW staff.
The project for fencing the terrain, where the NDF will be situated, is financed by the Kozloduy International Fund which is administrated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. According to the design the fence shall be completed within 240 days and the total length shall be approximately 3.5 km.
After the ceremony, Ira Stefanova commented: “This is the first construction activity on the Radiana site. Today we signed the Protocol No.1 which is a handover of the detailed design to the contractor and Protocol No.2 which opens the construction site. After the fence, as am implementation phase, the site shall be prepared and the infrastructure shall be relocated which is the responsibility of SE RAW according to the Spatial Planning Low”.
