Tests of a new facility witnessed by representatives of EC and EBRD

The 72-hour Operational Tests of the Size Reduction and Decontamination Workshop (SRDW), for materials from the decommissioning, were completed at 8.00 a.m. on 29th September 2017. The tests were performed using “simulants” (non-radioactive materials) and were aimed at testing the functionality of all machines, systems and infrastructure. The new facility is of key importance to the successful implementation of activities related to the safe decommissioning of the 440 megawatt reactors of Kozloduy NPP.
The design and construction of the SRDW was financed by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF) through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), as part of the grant funds which the European Union provides to Bulgaria due to the early shutdown of Units 1 to 4 of the Nuclear Power Plant. The tests were personally attended by the representatives of the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission (EC) and EBRD. The witnessing of SRDW tests was part of the programme for decommissioning project progress monitoring, which is performed twice a year according to established rules. The visit also included walkdowns to Radiana site, Turbine Hall of the four shutdown Units, the new Plasma Melting Facility (PMF) and Specialized Division Radioactive waste – Kozloduy.
During the accompanying working meetings, the monitoring team expressed their satisfaction with the current status of the Decommissioning Programme, with particular emphasis on the progress of the National Disposal Facility for Low  and Intermediate-level Radioactive Waste, where the construction is actually under way. The positive for the progress of the Size Reduction and Decontamination Workshop was highlighted in connection with the fact that, when the facility is put into operation, it will help to process and free release the quantities of materials already accumulated from the decommissioning activities.
The monitoring of the decommissioning activities at Kozloduy NPP site preceded two important regular meetings in the headquarters of the EC’s Directorate-General for Energy in Luxembourg. The Kozloduy Programme Monitoring Committee and Nuclear Decommissioning Assistance Programme (NDAP) Committee Meetings will be held on 11th and 12th October. The final event for 2017, related to monitoring and reporting of the Decommissioning Programme implementation, the Assembly of Contributors (AoC) of the KIDSF, is scheduled for 18th December in London.
