The repair of the Kozloduy Ring Road has begun
23.05.2018On 23 May 2018, works on the major renovation (rehabilitation) of the Kozloduy Ring Road began. The section is part of the II-11 Republican Road with length of 11 200 meters – from the KNPP checkpoint Harlets to the exit for the town of Lom* and at the end part, there is approximately 1 km of the road which until now was macadamized only with a stone faction.
The project is worth around 3,200,000 Euros and is fully funded by the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF), which is administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) The investment was approved by the Fund’s contributors after State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SE RAW) successfully justified it as a cost for part of the infrastructure required for the construction of the National Disposal Facility for Low- and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste (NDF). In the course of about three and a half years under the strict EBRD monitoring and the Bulgarian institutions responsible for road construction activities, all legal procedures to reach the actual implementation of the major renovation of the section were gradually completed.
At the ceremony for the Project’s official launch were the District Governor of Vratsa District – Mrs. Malina Nikolova, Mayor of Kozloduy Municipality – Mrs. Marinela Nikolova, Kozloduy Municipal Chairperson – Mrs. Maya Zaneva, Executive Director of SERAW – Mr. Dilian Petrov and other representatives of the Enterprise, Associate Director – Head of KIDSF, Nuclear Safety Department at EBRD – Mr. Valentin Seider, the Manager of the company implementing the rehabilitation – Mr. Viktor Velev, representatives of the site construction supervision and the District road traffic control.
The renovation of the ring road includes its complete rehabilitation, including raising of levels in the many collapsed areas. It will be carried out in full compliance with the Technical design approved by the Road Infrastructure Agency.
The repair activities will be performed by the appointed Contractor “Agromah” EOOD and will last about three months. More than ten road construction machines will be used for their implementation, including one of only two recyclers in Bulgaria – a specific facility using the modern cold recycling technology provided for the project.
The rehabilitation will take place in two stages. The first one includes the section from the exit to the town of Lom to the three-way junction at the Kozloduy entrance sign. The section will be completely closed and the traffic will be routed through a roundabout route in the town. The repair of the second part will be done in a single lane and that the road traffic will be controlled, including a temporary traffic light system.
