State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SE RAW) held two preliminary information meetings with the communities in the municipalities of Kozloduy and Miziya, prior to the official public hearings of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) for decommissioning of Kozloduy NPP’s stopped units 1-4. The meetings in the two settlements were attended by the Deputy Mayors of the concerned municipalities, representatives of the administrations and citizens. SE RAW was represented in the talks by Georgi Gioshev, Decommissioning Director; Maya Mateeva, Safety and Quality Director; Plamen Petkov, Chief Engineer at Specialized Enterprise ‘Decommissioning – Kozloduy’; Bratan Bratanov, Head of Engineering Equipment Department at Specialized Enterprise ‘RAW Management – units 3 and 4’ and Angelina Todorova, ecologist of the enterprise.
During the preliminary meetings the experts of SE RAW acquainted the attendees with main stages of the process of decommissioning the stopped nuclear units. They clarified also the EIA procedure and spoke about the activity, mission and responsibility of the enterprise. SE RAW’s representatives replied in detail to the citizens’ questions concerning in general the facility dismantling, the approach with decommissioning the units’ radioactive part, radioactive waste storage and the safety of people, executing the decommissioning process. The experts’ replies convinced the citizens that the dismantling and consecutive decommissioning works are carried out safely, in line with the European and national requirements and legislation and with special care for the environment and the population.
The Environmental Impact Assessment Report and the Compatibility Assessment Report for the decommissioning of units 1-4 of the nuclear power plant have been filed and approved at this stage by the Ministry of Environment and Water, as all important aspects have been taken into consideration, including the transboundary context – the opinion of Romanian citizens and authorities. The official public hearings are to be held on July 15 in the town of Kozloduy and on July 16 – in the town of Miziya, where people can again ask questions and make suggestions.
The two reports and their accompanying documents are made available for public access in line with the legal requirements. Their full versions – in Bulgarian and English, are published also on SE RAW’s website (www.dprao.bg). On the website is posted also the electronic issue of RAO Info, a specially prepared monthly bulletin, distributed on the territory of the two concerned municipalities, whose aim is to enhance people’s awareness regarding the decommissioning and to encourage their involvement in taking decisions that concern the environment.
