Danube Installation ready to be commissioned

14.11.2012

The completion of the project for the construction of a radioactive water treatment installation, which was financed by EBRD, was officially celebrated on 14 December 2012.

The facility is related to the process of decommissioning of the shutdown units of Kozloduy NPP. The installation was conditionally called ‘Danube’ and represents a filter cascade designed to clear radioactive water of salts, boric acid, insoluble particles and other impurities and at the end of the process to produce pure desalinated water. The facility was installed within AB 1 as part of a project which started in August 2004. SERAW undertook its management on 1 July 2012.

The main functions of the facility were presented at an official event, attended by a team representing the main contractors – Atomestroyexport CJsc, which worked on the project supported by technologists from GUP MosNPO Radon.

According to preliminary information, the operation of the installation will bring about a two-hundredfold reduction in the volume of radioactive water. It is expected that SERAW will soon receive the operating license, and the Danube Installation will start operation.
