12th of July 2019 is the date of the renewed license for operation of a radioactive waste management facility through the Specialised Division PRRAW – Novi Han withState Enterprise Radioactive Waste (SERAW) as a license holder.
The document was officially handed over on 15 July 2019 by the Chairman of the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) – Dr. Lachezar Kostov, to the Executive Director of SERAW – Dilyan Petrov. The license shall establish all conditions for the operation of the repository in accordance with the Act on the Safe Use of Nuclear Energy. An integral part of the document are also 6 annexes which include: the list of documents certifying the compliance with the requirements of the ASUNE and defining the internal rules for the implementation of the license activities; the list of the main sites of the radioactive waste management facility, through which the activities under the license are carried out; the data for the RAW being stored; the requirements for the staff involved in carrying out the activities for which legal capacity is required.
In order for the license to be successfully renewed, a team of about 10 experts from the SD PRRAW – Novi Han has worked for one year in order to update the documentation and to develop new documents in line with the development of the regulatory framework in the field of nuclear legislation.
The validity period of the license is until 31 December 2025.
